The Calendar TBO Trap: Why a Low-Hour Used Gyroplane Can Still Be Overdue

Assess engine calendar time and hours against the documents for its exact model and serial number. Airframe age alone cannot establish whether an overhaul is due.

A gorgeous used gyroplane with 300 hours on the tach looks like a bargain next to a factory-fresh one. Check the calendar before you check the hours, though, because that same aircraft can be well past its engine's overhaul interval without ever having flown enough to wear it out.

The short version

  • TBO depends on the exact engine model, serial number, modifications and applicable manufacturer documents. Do not apply one interval to every 912 or 914.
  • A low-hour engine that has simply sat for years can hit the calendar limit long before the hour limit.
  • Low hours on a used aircraft is not automatically good news; it can mean the engine sat unused, which has its own problems.
  • The build or last-overhaul date belongs on your pre-purchase checklist next to the tach time, not instead of it.

How the trap actually catches a buyer

A used gyroplane with 300 engine hours may still have significant calendar-related maintenance ahead. Airframe age does not establish engine age: the engine may have been replaced or overhauled. Match its serial number and documented history to the current manufacturer maintenance instructions and applicable service bulletins before estimating the remaining interval.

The earlier version applied 2,000 hours or 15 years across the 912 and 914 families and treated airframe age as proof that an overhaul was due. That was too broad. An appropriately qualified maintainer needs to establish the applicable interval and requirements for the individual engine and aircraft.

This is exactly the distinction covered in what TBO actually means and time since overhaul: the two are different numbers, and a low reading on one tells you nothing about where you stand on the other.

Low hours on a used aircraft is not automatically the good news it looks like. An engine that sat for years without running can develop its own problems, seals drying out, corrosion in cylinders, fuel system components degrading, that a well-exercised engine with more hours on it may never see. Low hours plus long idle time is its own category of used aircraft, not simply a gently used one.

A listing that only quotes the hour figure cannot distinguish any of these from each other, and the price should not be identical across all three.

What to actually check before you make an offer

Get the engine's build date or last overhaul date from the logbook, not an estimate from the seller, and do the calendar math yourself against the manufacturer's current TBO figure. Ask directly whether the engine has been run regularly or sat idle for extended stretches, and treat a vague answer the same way you would treat a gap in the logbook itself. If the aircraft is at or near its calendar limit, price in the cost of an overhaul as a near-term expense, not a someday one, the same way you would budget any other real cost covered in what maintenance actually costs per year.

This is not only a maintenance question either. A lender or an insurer reviewing the same file asks the identical question, since both are pricing the aircraft they are actually financing or covering, not the one the tach reading implies. An aircraft past its calendar TBO with no overhaul plan can complicate financing and change what an underwriter is willing to quote, on top of whatever it costs you directly.

Use the engine’s documents

Neither number alone tells you what you need to know. Hours tell you how much the engine has actually been used. The calendar tells you how much time has elapsed since the relevant manufacturing or overhaul event. Both belong in a documented assessment with a qualified maintainer.
