Engines, fuel and instruments
You do not need to be a mechanic. You need to know what the engine wants, what the gauges are saying, and which noise means land.

The engines you will actually meet
Most modern factory gyroplanes fly behind a Rotax four-stroke: the 912 family, and turbocharged 914 / 915 variants that hold power at altitude, which is why hot-and-high schools favour them. Older and homebuilt machines often use two-stroke engines such as the Rotax 582: lighter and simpler, but less tolerant of neglect and dependent on oil mixed with the fuel.
What every engine asks of you
- Warm it up before asking for full power, per the flight manual.
- Use the fuel and oil the manual names, not what is cheapest today.
- Believe the gauges early. Temperature or pressure moving the wrong way on the ground is a cancelled flight, not a note for later.

Carburetor ice
A carburetor cools the air passing through it by tens of degrees. In humid air that cooling freezes moisture inside the carburetor, choking the engine, and it happens readily in conditions that feel nothing like winter: high humidity with outside temperatures anywhere from roughly freezing up into the 20s°C.
What you notice
A gradual, unexplained loss of RPM or manifold pressure, possibly with roughness, in cruise or especially on a long descent at low power.
What you do
Apply carb heat (or the equivalent your type has) and expect it to run rougher first as the ice melts through. Your flight manual's procedure wins; some fuel-injected and heated-intake engines are far less susceptible.

The gauges that matter
Instrument What it tells a gyroplane pilot Rotor RPM The one that is unique to us. Below the flight manual's minimum, nothing else on this list matters. Engine RPM / MAP Power set and power available. The first place carb ice and a failing engine show up. Airspeed Flown by number on approach and climb-out, per your manual. Altimeter Set to the current altimeter setting from the METAR you can now read. Temperatures and pressures Coolant, oil, cylinder head, exhaust gas: trend instruments. Watch direction, not just limits. Fuel Level, and time. Plan on the manual's burn rate plus reserve, and treat the gauge as a cross-check, not a promise.

Limits are ceilings, not targets. A trend moving the wrong way before takeoff is the cheapest possible warning, and the ground is where you get to act on it for free.
