Weather that kills flights: fronts, storms and shear

Stability, told by the clouds
Stable air — stratus
Flat, layered cloud, smooth air, and poorer visibility in haze or mist. Comfortable to sit in, but the low ceilings and visibility are the sport pilot's limits waiting to be crossed.
Unstable air — cumulus
Puffy, building cloud, good visibility between bumps, and thermals a light gyroplane feels all afternoon. Fine flying early; watch the vertical growth, because a towering cumulus is a thunderstorm audition.
The practical tell: what is the cloud doing vertically? Flat means stable. Growing means unstable, and the afternoon will be livelier than the morning.

Fronts
Front Typically brings Cold front Fast-moving, narrow and violent: showers or storms, gusty shifting winds, then rapid clearing with brilliant visibility. Warm front Slow, wide and grey: lowering stratus for hours, drizzle, poor visibility, conditions that slide below VFR gradually rather than dramatically. For a light rotorcraft the cold front is a timing problem: do not be airborne when it arrives, and enjoy the air behind it. The warm front is a patience problem: it can sit on your airport all day.

Thunderstorms and shear
A thunderstorm lives in three stages: building (updrafts, cumulus towering), mature (rain begins, violent up- and downdrafts side by side, the dangerous stage), and dissipating (downdrafts and gust fronts that still bite). No stage is flyable in a gyroplane.
The distances
- Give any storm cell a wide berth: hail and violent shear extend well outside the cloud, and the FAA's guidance is to stay at least 20 miles from severe storms.
- Wind shear, an abrupt change in wind over a short distance, lives near storms, gust fronts, fronts themselves and low-level temperature inversions. At approach speed in a light gyroplane a shear encounter is an immediate go-around and a hard look at whether to try again at all.
- A microburst is the worst case: a concentrated downdraft that turns a headwind into a tailwind in seconds. Airliners respect them; light aircraft simply do not fly near them.

The mature stage holds simultaneous violent updrafts and downdrafts, hail and shear. The onset of rain at the surface is its calling card, and no stage is safe to penetrate.

Shear is the abrupt change, met near storms, fronts, gust fronts and inversions, and at approach speed it can cost a light aircraft its flying margin in one gulp.
