Takeoffs, landings and the go-around

A gyroplane takes off and lands differently from an airplane in one specific way: the rotor has to be doing its job before anything else matters.

    Rotor RPM is the first job, not the throttle

    Before a gyroplane ever starts rolling, the rotor has to be pre-rotated to the RPM the manufacturer specifies. Everything else in the takeoff, directional control, lift-off attitude, climb airspeed, depends on that number being right first.

    What the FAA checks

    Considering traffic and wind, choosing where to pre-rotate to the correct RPM, then managing that RPM through the acceleration and the climb.

    Where pilots actually go wrong

    Releasing the brakes before the rotor is properly spun up, or accelerating faster than the rotor can keep pace with. Both are procedure failures, not bad luck.

    Once rolling, directional control on the surface, the correct lift-off attitude, and a climb at the manufacturer's recommended airspeed follow in sequence. A crosswind adds a ground-track correction on top, the same correction covered in the crosswind lesson.

    Soft-field technique: the same principle, more margin

    A soft-field takeoff and landing are not a different maneuver so much as the normal one flown with extra care for a surface that will not tolerate a hard touchdown or a stopped prop.

    Why it matters on a gyroplane specifically

    • A soft or rough surface that stops the wheels abruptly is a real hazard to a lightweight airframe.
    • Staying in ground effect during the soft-field takeoff keeps weight off the wheels while the rotor and airspeed both build.

    The go-around: a normal maneuver, not a failure

    A go-around is not an admission that something went wrong. It is the correct response the moment an approach stops working: wrong airspeed, a runway that is not clear, a gust that unsettles the aircraft on short final.

    The decision that matters is when, not how. The FAA tests a timely decision to discontinue the approach, applying appropriate power, establishing a climb, and maintaining ground track. Waiting to see if the landing will somehow work out is the mistake, not the go-around itself.

    Fly it the same way every time: power in, establish the climb, correct for wind drift, and complete the appropriate checklist before deciding what to try next.
